I find it a bit annoying that the chat display doesn't include the time of the entries, so you have no idea how old the conversation is. I'm considering switching to a different type of chat that would include such information.

Discussion?

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I'm thinking the time would take up more space in the display and wouldn't add much benefit. Like, you don't know if the last message is recent but you can see if the people are still around because there is always a current list of visitors. And you can see if new messages show up, so you can tell if a response is likely to be heard.

And if the people aren't around, one can always start a thread. It could start to look crowded with time on every line. I like the chat applet being there but in a simple form. But as usual, I'm not fussy.

The point about the amount of space on the line is a good one. A useful compromise would be a small text box telling you the time of the most recent activity.

Is the layout of the chat applet customizable? Perhaps you can specify what goes where.

No, this chat applet doesn't allow very much customization. I'd need to switch to something else.

I've replaced that chat with a different one. It seems to load quicker, it gives times, it's only seen on the index page, and it is located low on the page instead of on the top.
If anyone wants to go straight to the chat and not even see the forums, they can click the "Chat" link in the index in the upper right.

I've restored a few of the modifications and have replaced one ("Last Post Titles") with a similar one that was incompatible with the current version of phpBB. The ones that have not yet been restored are probably also incompatible with the current version and I'll have to find replacements. The current version apparently included a number of security fixes (then why so much spam lately?) that broke quite a few modifications.

The opening post in this topic lists the modifications and they're colour coded. If they're in red, they're not active at this time.

The previously-installed Quick Reply MOD has been removed because the current version of phpBB has a built-in quick reply system. It is necessary to enable quick reply for each forum on the board individually. If you find a forum in which I have neglected to enable the quick reply, please let me know.

Thanks. I like that one.
"Let us remember that no man can borrow money, as a good business transaction, under any system, unless he has the required security to make the lender whole in case he should lose the money. What a stupendous wrong is this—that a man having credit cannot use it, but must exchange it and pay a monopoly price, which is really for the privilege of using his own credit!"

The chat MOD we were previously using has finally been updated to work with the new version of phpBB3 and I've reinstalled it.

Yesterday, I added the MOD "Advanced Visual Anti Bot" from http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi ... &t=1545695
I'm not seeing any new spam this morning, so I'm cautiously optimistic that it's working.
